What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that leads to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. ED affects over 10 million males in the U.S. alone and has been shown to impact males of all ages, though its prevalence increases with age. ED can impact individuals in a multitude of ways including in relationships, in self-esteem, and with quality of life. ED can present without a known cause or due to other underlying physical or psychological conditions.

How can pelvic floor physical therapy help?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can assist in a variety of ways. First, by assessing the health of the pelvic floor as a whole and evaluating the range, strength, and control of the pelvic floor muscles, which relate to erectile function. Treatment may include extensive education, hands-on manual therapy, and specific exercise prescription. Pelvic PTs can also assess and treat nerve involvement leading to ED. Pelvic floor therapy looks at the body as a whole and will also evaluate and treat impairments of the spine, hips, and/or legs that could be related to symptoms.
